Over 70 million Indian Internet users queried search engine Google seeking more information about politicians, Satyam and Bollywood stars more than ever before, Google India officials said. Google’s annual Zeitgeist reflected what Indians were really looking for on the World Wide Web.
“The diverse set of popular searches very clearly shows that people are interested in the events that are surrounding them be it the Budget, Satyam or a Nokia 5800,” said Vinay Goel, head of products, Google India.
Google Zeitgeist 2009 very clearly showed that a worsening economic crisis apart from local politics remained the most sought after subjects.
Apart from querying more details about the financial budget, Indian Web users also spent a lot of time looking for the latest Satyam share prices.
For Google, the fastest rising queries are those which were the most popular searches conducted in 2009 and then ranked them based on how much their popularity increased compared to 2008.
According to Mr Goel, the online search pattern has very clearly showed that there is a definite shift among the netizens in India. Around two years ago, the predominant queries were largely related to technology, but not anymore.
This change in pattern also reflects the browsing behaviour and the growing users of Internet in India which is estimated in the range of 70-80 million and growing quite rapidly.

While Rahul Gandhi was the most popular politician, Sania Mirza continues to be the most popular Indian sports star — holding this position for three years in a row, Katrina Kaif emerged as the top searched Bollywood star for two consecutive years and e-mail & video sharing edge out social networking as the most popular destination site.Check here More
